A watercolour sailboat

It still feels a bit off, but here is another attempt on a watercolour painting:

I wanted the boat to look a lot more realistic, and – as always – painted in a looser style.

The whole painting just looks too simple, if you ask me.

Uncreative colours, and no personal touch.

I’ll keep going, though.

It must become better in the end 🙂

  1. I like it, it doesn’t look too simple to me. I yearn for the day I can paint like this instead of being heavy handed and overworking things. I agree with the paint, paint, paint approach 🙂

    1. Thank you, and well done on your paintings 🙂

I know what you mean, though. To paint in a loose style is the hardest thing I’ve ever tried in painting, and I’m still struggling with it.

It’s so difficult to let pieces, lines and details wash away, and just going bold with your brush strokes.

Starting out I was painfully concerned about getting absolutely everything right, but that just makes all the tiniest errors pop out.

To achieve it I guess we just have to trust in ourselves, and let all those worries go. And paint, paint, paint is the only thing you can do 🙂

  2. Every good painter I talk to says the same thing: keep painting. Paint, paint and paint some more. You’ll come to know your medium and how to manipulate it to achieve the subtlety you’re looking for. You have a nice start here. If you have access to u-tube there are a lot of watercolor demos in which an artist shows how they bring in depth, luminosity, etc into their paintings. You can pick up lots of good tips and techniques from some very accomplished artists. Best of luck, you’re doing great!

    1. Thank you for the encouragement, Angie 🙂 I used youtube quite a lot during my first years of oil painting, and Tim Wilmots tutorial videos for my watercolouring. Lately I’ve tried painting all on my own, which has given me some disappointments. The feeling when I get in a good one, though, is great. I think I’ll go back to tutorial videos from time to time, because it’s just a great way to learn and refresh some skills 🙂

  3. Thanks, Beate 🙂 I see some positive features in it. It just doesn’t look exciting or interesting. I had a very different expectation beforehand, so that might be some of the reason. I need to be more bold with my colours, though 🙂

      1. Love that feeling! 🙂 I’ve also noticed that if I just leave a painting for a day or two it looks better when I get back to it. Sometimes I just fulfill my urge to throw it in the bin, though 😉 Be done with it and start something new.

    1. Thanks, Elaine 🙂 It just looks so flat. I think it’s because there’s no real blend of colours. Kind of a sketchting style, really. I need to work my colours and brush more 🙂
