Gran Canaria Harbour

When we were on holiday in Gran Canaria this summer, we passed a harbour in Arguineguin where I had to stop and take a photo.

I love a good harbour scene, and this was one I felt really strong about painting.

It looked like this:

Arguineguin, Gran Canaria

The colourful boats and the tropic surroundings just looks brilliant.

I knew I wouldn’t be able to do it justice, but I had to try.

So I started with a quick pencil sketch, which looked like this:

The sketch

Then came the wash:

And lastly the final layer:

I think (as always) that I could have painted it in a looser style.

The lines are a bit too strong, and the colours don’t blend in that «watercolour way» which I wanted.

But, being me, this isn’t bad.

I’m quite happy with it. Even though there is a lot to improve on.

So, let’s get on with the next one!

    1. Thank you, Catherine 🙂 I do like to see the process of others when they make a painting, so I do my best to offer the same thing myself. I’m glad you like it. I’m quite happy with how it turned out 🙂

  1. I love this one! Actually, I’m kind of glad the colors didn’t «blend» in the way you first wanted. I think the sharper contrast of lines and colors serves the painting well. The shadows are especially awesome! The whole scene just comes to life and jumps right off the page — in a very good way.

    1. Thank you, Judith ☺ I’m glad you can give me another perspective on it. I guess I just imagined it differently when I set about making it, and therefore think of it as too rigid. But they never turn out exactly like I plan anyway ☺☺

  2. This is great Kim, I like it! Perhaps the shades of red should be switched between the boats? I.e. the darker at the back? But either way this is a great representation – and I’ve been trying to do that looser wash style myself following our previous chat on it.

    Kudos 👍

    1. Thank you! 🙂 Yes, you have a point there. I do tend to be a bit quick (or lazy..) with the choice of colours, just wanting to get it on the paper as soon as possible 😀

I would have wished that this one ended up a bit looser, actually. But it’s so damn hard to manage it. Hope you’re having fun with it as well 🙂

      1. I can relate. Sometimes simple is better, but I tend to overdraw and put to much detail in, hahaha. I don’t think you have to worry though. It turnd out very well and the more you practice the more you will approach what you are aiming for.
